Abstract
Student involvement in scientific applied research is regulated by international and national normative documents. Teachers participating in scientific research develop their competence as researchers, and employ the results of their research for the development of study process and professional practice. In the context of modern studies a significant role should be given to the experiential learning and experience reflection as an educational methodology. It is becoming relevant to develop a critically and reflectively thinking professional who is able to adapt in a changing world of work, to recognize and reflect social and professional issues in practice, and to solve them. The objective of the study was to reveal the experience of student participation in applied research by defining the importance of reflection employed in the process of studies as the methodology of experiential learning. The participants of the research were second year general practice nursing and midwifery students studying surgical nursing. Therefore, the incorporation of these students into the surgical patient survey was closely related to the study subject aims and objectives. The research method was unstructured written reflection. The students, who participated in this applied research study, had positive experiences that were related to a justified interest in various clinical situations, and benevolent patients who let the students empathize with the patient‘s situation. The coordination of student involvement in the development of scientific applied activities and experiential learning results in achieving study subject aims, helps the students to prepare methodologically for the research, and provides students with positive experience that is necessary for personal and professional development.
