Abstract

Evaluated prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus among students of Kauno kolegija/University of Applied Sciences in 2003-2012 years and susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus to antimicrobial agents. Investigated 426 students during 2003-2006 and 2011-2012 years. Were detected 426 S. aureus strains. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) identification and antibiotic susceptibility was tested manually according to CLSI (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, USA) and EARSS (European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System) recommendations. The prevalence of S. aureus among students was 46.9%. Prevalence of S. aureus strains among students general practice nurses 56.8% was established and prevalence of S. aureus among nurses after first professional practice was 65.1% and after second professional practice was 61.5%. Five (3.9%) methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains were grown from nurses after first and second professional practice. Methicillin- susceptible S. aureus strains were most resistant to penicillin (83,8- 85,0%), ampicillin (72-86,5%) and erythromycin (33,8-40,5%). MRSA were susceptible to vancomycin (100%).
