Abstract

free radicals, antioxidants, oxidative stress. Free radicals are products of normal metabolism. Endogenous antioxidative system neutralise the extensive quantities of free radicals. The pathological processes as inflammation or cancer result in augmenting the formation of free radicals and oxidative stress occurs. For neutralisation of oxidative stress the antioxidants are used. Much remains unknown concerning the mode of action of antioxidants. A lot of problems remain: which kind of antioxidants should be used for the prevention of one or other type of tumours, what doses and combinations should be administered, should patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy be prescribed antioxidants? The aim of this article – is to review the literature data on the use of antioxidants in oncology based on novel scientific achievements.
