Abstract

Objective: To present a clinical case of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and to give a review of current data on the subject. Materials and methods: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is an iatrogenic complication of assisted reproduction technologies. We report a case of 32 year old woman admitted with suspected ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. The patient gave history of ovulation induction. On admission she was on her fifth week of pregnancy, complaining of abdominal pain. Blood test revealed leukocytosis with left shift and hypoproteinemia. Ovarian enlargement, ascites and pleural effusion were discovered on ultrasound examination. The patient was successfully treated in 17 days. Conclusions: This case report discloses an important complication of infertility treatment. As assisted reproduction technologies are being more frequently used in Lithuania, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is likely to appear more often. While mild ovarian hyperstimulation usually does not require any special treatment, severe disease needs substantial attention as it is a potentially lethal disorder.
